A Watershed Moment: Michigan Department of Environmental Quality

On today’s episode we hear from Heidi Hollenbach and David O’Donnell of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) who discuss its mission.

The DEQ plays a large role in keeping Michigan’s environment healthy and thriving. It’s mission is to promote the “wise management of Michigan’s air, land, and water resources to support a sustainable environment, healthy communities, and vibrant economy.” The DEQ is a leader in environmental stewardship, a partner in economic development, and a provider of excellent customer service, its three guiding principles.

It often gets mistaken that the DEQ is an environmental advocate, however its job is to make sure healthy environmental practices are carried out correctly. “Our goal is to make sure that state and environmental statutes are implemented faithfully be everyone, by governments and by industry and by citizens,” says O’Donnell.

The DEQ encourages citizens to get involved by voicing their concerns and talking to a staff person at the DEQ. The number for the District office in 616-356-0500.
