In this week’s Watershed Moment, we talk with West Michigan Environmental Action Council Women and the Environment Intern, Madeline Boyd about Pinkwashing.
Specifically, as it pertains to women’s issues and the environment, breast cancer is a topic that gets brought up often. With that topic often seen at the forefront of women’s issues, we are seeing an increase in the amount of “Pink Washing” or misleading consumers to believe that a company or a product is benefiting breast cancer research – when many of the pink products are actually causing breast cancer.
“It’s important that women know about environmental impacts in order for them to prevent cases of breast cancer.” – Madeline Boyd
Further, Madeline expands on the topic to include Green Washing, which is very similar to pink washing except for environmental products instead of “pink” products.
“Green washing uses this movement for environmental justice to promote a product so that it misleads customers to believe that a product has environmentally beneficial impacts when actually they use tactics that are detrimental to the environment.”, Madeline Boyd
