Attorney General Affirms the Sole Use of NRTF Dollars for Natural Resource Protection

Attorney General Bill Schuette ended the debate on the parameters of Michigan’s National Trust Resource Trust Fund this week by concluding NRTF dollars “cannot be used for the maintenance of existing public recreation facilities, such as maintenance dredging of existing harbors.”

A number of bills in the state legislature were targeting NRTF funds for use in harbor dredging, infrastructure maintenance, airports, roads for mining operations,  and other interests (HB 4578, 4579, SB 229, 214).

Attorney General Opinion 7270 joins Governor Rick Snyder’s signed legislation that  found alternate funding for emergency dredging projects to address low water levels in the Great Lakes. 

The League of Conservation Voters, Nature Conservancy and others issued statements yesterday lauding the decision.
