In case reducing landfill waste wasn’t rewarding enough, the City of Grand Rapids’ newly launched recycling incentive program will offer even more encouragement for city residents to think twice before throwing their refuse in the trash can.
Mygrcitypoints.com, an innovative, web-based program officially launched this morning, is intended to encourage recycling, community volunteering, and support for local businesses. Residents who utilize the city’s single-stream recycling program (reaching over 42,000 households) may create a free, online account by visiting mygrcitypoints.com where they can earn and track points for their recycling efforts.
The city will use the identification chips already installed on recycling carts to tally points which they will automatically credit to users’ accounts. Points may be redeemed at over sixty Local First businesses.
“Mygrcitypoints.com creates a win-win-win for citizens, local businesses and city government by linking community stewardship, local economic development and a citizen-centric government with an easy-to-use rewards program like concepts already used for credit cards,” says Greg Sundstrom, Grand Rapids City Manager.
Additional phases of the initiative to be enacted later this year will include opportunities for earning points by volunteering with approved community nonprofit organizations, city organizations and city events.
