This image addresses the problem of America’s dependence on fossil energies. The left panel reflects on the BP Gulf spill, the middle on the Kalamazoo spill; the right panel shows a still-pristine North Michigan stream and healthy wildlife. In the instances of the BP and Enbridge spills, industry assured the public of the safety of its procedures. Now the eyes of industry have turned towards Michigan for its natural gas potential, which may be extracted through new, more environmentally harmful fracking processes. In light of its uniquely abundant and varied fresh water resources, Michigan has a deep responsibility to protect its water. With disaster as a trend, it is clear that the claims of industry will not be enough protect Michigan’s resources.
