WMEACtion ALERT: Tell Michigan’s State House not to send a Valentine to Oil and Gas this week!

O&GValentineMichigan House Bill 4885 was passed last week by the House Committee on Energy and Technology.  The bill reduces taxes on oil and gas produced in Michigan; it decreases oil severance taxes from 6.6% to 4% and natural gas taxes from 5% to 4% for oil or natual gas extracted by a “carbon dioxide secondary or enhanced recovery project.”

The bill will likely be voted on by the full State House this week.

WMEAC supports the scientific study of carbon sequestration to find more ways to reduce green house gas emissions, but decreasing oil and gas taxes to encourage the extraction of more oil and gas from the ground is not a smart way to accomplish this.
