Litter Boom

The “Litter Boom” is a floating barrier designed to catch and prevent litter from continuing to float downstream. This installation by WMEAC was designed to educate and help keep Plaster Creek clean from litter. Additionally, this was a collaboration effort with the Osprey Initiative, who created and designed the boom, with locations all over the world!

About the design of the Litter Capture Device:

  • This boom is made of enhanced polymer geomembranes, which is a long-lasting material that is high-strength, UV resistant, and puncture resistant. Furthermore, all of the boom components are corrosion resistant, lead and mercury-free.
  • It is also designed so that if something heavy (like a large log) comes down the stream, it will unlatch and release it downstream.
We are currently doing maintenance and collection at the boom once a week with collaboration with Calvin University Summer Research.
