In the heart of West Michigan, one man’s journey is a beacon of inspiration for sustainable transportation. Karl Bloss, a local West Michigan resident, has not only embraced the electric vehicle (EV) movement but has also dedicated himself to advocating for a cleaner, greener future. It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Karl Bloss on being honored with the prestigious EV Advocate of the Year Award by the national Electric Vehicle Association.

Karl’s path to becoming an EV enthusiast was shaped by his experiences working abroad in Europe. Frustrated by high gas prices and the pollution from diesel vehicles in regular use there, he made a conscious choice to drive a little electric Mini Cooper while overseas. This decision then was mostly about cost savings; but also, about environmental stewardship, a choice that would set the tone for his future advocacy.

Upon returning to the United States, Karl continued his corporate career but remained steadfast in his commitment to electric vehicles. His research led him to purchase a 2012 Nissan LEAF, taking advantage of workplace EV chargers and a manageable 20-mile round-trip commute. This marked the beginning of a transformative journey into the world of electric transportation for Karl and his family.

The transition to electric vehicles didn’t stop there. In 2015, a Tesla Model S joined the family’s garage, serving as a long-distance vehicle with the added perk of free lifetime supercharging. Karl’s dedication to EVs extended beyond personal use; shortly after his retirement, he was sought out and hired by Consumers Energy as its Electric Vehicle Program Coordinator, contributing to the promotion of electric vehicles, EV education and outreach and the development of internal EV policies.

As Karl approaches his second retirement in April, his official one he says, he shows no signs of slowing down in his commitment to EV advocacy. He plans to continue managing the Southwest Michigan EV Association chapter and spearheading monthly Driver EV socials, providing a platform for EV enthusiasts to gather, socialize, and educate others interested in making the switch to electric vehicles.

In a time when misinformation about electric vehicles is widespread, Karl Bloss is a reliable source of information. He refutes common misconceptions, such as the idea that EVs leave drivers stranded in cold weather or contribute to child labor in lithium mining. He also speaks to concerns about the grid’s ability to handle the increased demand from EVs, reassuring us that the current infrastructure is capable, with the majority of people charging at home overnight when power plants have excess capacity. Karl’s efforts include developing informative factsheets and debunking myths surrounding EVs, emphasizing their affordability and the diverse options available.

Looking ahead, Karl sees a bright future for EVs, emphasizing they are the primary way forward for the small vehicle transportation sector to reduce and eventually eliminate greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. He also debunks thoughts of using hydrogen as a viable alternative for light-duty vehicles, citing its energy-intensive production needs, current production from fossil fuels and complicated storage requirements due to high flammability and diffusivity.

Karl’s recent recognition as the EV Advocate of the Year is a testament to his commitment and contributions to the electric vehicle movement. His legacy extends beyond personal achievements, leaving behind a thriving Michigan EV Facebook group and the Southwest Michigan chapter of the Electric Vehicle Association.

In parting, Karl encourages everyone to experience an electric vehicle firsthand, and learn about and embrace the benefits of this evolving technology. He also says to be sure to encourage our elected officials, especially at the federal level, to do the same.  For those intrigued by Karl Bloss’s journey and eager to explore the world of electric vehicles, the Michigan EV Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/WestMichiganEV) and the Electric Vehicle Association’s Southwest Michigan chapter (https://www.myeva.org/chapter-list) offer valuable resources and opportunities to connect with like-minded enthusiasts.

Karl Bloss’s story is not just a personal journey; it’s a roadmap for anyone ready to drive change in the realm of sustainable transportation. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Karl Bloss, a true champion for a cleaner and more sustainable future in West Michigan.
