We are choosing 75 homes across 4 neighborhoods to see who can reduce their water consumption the most. We will work with you to install water saving devices throughout your home and at the end of the 3 months the home that saves the most water wins!

Income restrictions apply, you must be a homeowner or have permission from your landlord, and be a resident of one of these neighborhoods – Baxter, Roosevelt Park, Garfield Park, or SEEDS of Promise.
Priority is given to those who have been in their home for 10 years or more. We are also excited to be installing 15 rain gardens on properties throughout these neighborhoods. Please let us know if you are interested when you apply.

With a preference for homeowners who have owned their home for over 10 years.
Be a RENTER WHO is responsible for paying THEIR WATER BILL.

RAINY DAY PROJECT
In Year 1 of this pilot program, WMEAC worked with community partners working in Baxter, Garfield Park, Roosevelt Park, and Seeds of Promise Neighborhoods. to develop a more inclusive approach to engagement on residential green stormwater infrastructure practices and reduced water utility costs.
Together Rainy Day participants were able to save 42,636 gallons of water On average, each participant saved 2,500 gallons per billing quarter
The Rainy Day Project is a program championed through the collaboration of project partners West Michigan Environmental Action Council (WMEAC), GreenHome Institute, and the City of Grand Rapids. Founded by a diverse group of concerned citizens, WMEAC is a non-profit organization focused on building sustainable communities and protecting water resources. Together with GreenHome Institute, a Grand Rapids-based organization passionate about empowering residents and promoting healthy, sustainable homes, The Rainy Day Project is also facilitated through teamwork with the City of Grand Rapids in reducing stormwater runoff to the Grand River and its tributary streams.
In 2019, we kicked off the Rainy Day Contest. Residents in the 4 target neighborhoods received “water conservation kits” and green stormwater infrastructure assessments. These kits included a low flow toilet, a low flow showerhead, and 2 faucet aerators. Residents could also elect to receive a rain barrel and a Grand River Rainscaping Assessment for placement of native plantings or a rain garden.
Efforts and impacts made through the Rainy Day Project are funded by grants through by the Funders Network’s Partners for Place (P4P) grant opportunity, the Wege Foundation and Meijer Inc. Together the Funders Network and the Wege Foundation have the mission to provide residents in Grand Rapids community preservation, flourishing neighborhood health, accessible education about water reduction methods, and a sustainable environment.
Funding for the Rainy Day Project consists of a two-year grant that includes community discussions on resident priorities and how this project can best benefit Grand Rapids neighborhoods, as well as the creation of community educational programs. Local businesses are also providing resources to help in the distribution and installation of in-home equipment, such as water efficient faucets.
